24/05/2016: League final week

Despite a late run by the Black Horse, the Hospital Club have confirmed the wooden spoon with a home defeat in their final match against Laughing Fish W. Meanwhile, with one postponed match outstanding, Glynde Club could still force a play-off with Hikers Rest A for the runner-up spot.

However, there's no doubt about the league winners: congratulations to Laughing Fish K who, in their final Lewes season, have once again taken the title.

15/11/2015: League Cup 2015-16

The Lewes committee has decided that a new format - the All England "Alternate (Triangle) Rules" - will be tried for the league cup this season, in place of the handicap system that has been used for the last two seasons. The rules are included in the AEBBA Rules document, and they are reproduced below.

We appreciate that this won't be the first choice of all our members but we hope everyone will give it a chance and, of course, feedback from the season will determine whether the format continues subsequently. As before, the aim of the League Cup competition is to allow the weaker teams to compete with the stronger ones on more level terms. It remains to be seen whether the new format will meet this aim.

Alternate (Triangle) Rules

  1. The break position for this variation is to play a ball from the centre of the 'D' to hit a triangle of six white balls.
  2. The triangle of balls is to be placed on the centre line between the 100 hole and the 10 hole, lead ball nearest the 100 hole, with its centre 14 cm from the centre of the 100 hole.
  3. Should insufficient balls be available to fill the triangle after the bar has dropped, the triangle will be built row by row from the front and right hand side.
  4. All shots to be played 'off-the-spot' from the centre of the 'D'.
  5. The black skittle will only count as a white for this competition, except for the 'last ball shot'.

Note that if all balls are cleared from the table at any time, they are returned to the 'triangle' position and the player on the table continues their break. All other rules, including the draw and order of play, etc., are as normal.

19/05/2015: Finals Night 2016

Finals night this year is being held at The Hassocks Hotel, on Monday 1st June. Games will start at 8pm.

Please could team captains donate prizes for the raffle (suggest 2 prizes per team to the value of GBP 10). Thanks.

More details can be found on the Lewes BB forum

01/12/2014: League Cup format

The League Cup, using the handicap system, starts on Monday 8 December. Details of the rules, and the handicap values, can be found on the Lewes forum.

The bonus values for each game can be seen on the website page for each game (click on the 'result' link).

The first matches, on Dec 8 are:

  • Albion v Hikers Rest (home bonus 1400)
  • Plough v Cock n Balls (away bonus 200)
  • Hospital Club v Laughing Fish K (home bonus 2200)
  • Laughing Fish W v Black Horse (away bonus 300)

So, as an example, in the game at the Albion the home team have a bonus value of (4800 - 3400 = ) 1400. After the draw the Albion captain will select the 3 games on which they will play the 'Joker'. This should be clearly marked on any score card(s) so that both teams are aware. In each of these 3 games, the Albion player will be given a starting score of 1400. Note that the allotment of 'the break' is not affected - the away team will receive it in games 1, 3, 5 as normal.
The 3 Jokers should be indicated on the 'scorecard' when returned. A column is added to the online result page to allow for this.

A couple of clarification points:

  • - A black peg erases ALL score - including any initial bonus;
  • - The Joker cannot be played on a conceded game (bye).

Good luck everyone!

02/11/2014: Bill Kerr

The league was saddened to here of the death, on Sunday, of Bill Kerr. Bill was a popular and well-loved member, and a great supporter of the Lewes league, who will be sadly missed. More information can be found on the bar billiards forum.

18/11/2013: League Cup - new format

The League Cup, with our new handicap system, starts on Monday 2 December. Full details of the rules, and the handicap values, can be found on the Lewes forum.

The bonus values for each game can be seen on the website page for each game (click on the 'result' link).

The first matches, on Dec 2 are:

  • Black Horse v Black Horse Rott. - Black Horse have bonus of 1800
  • Hassocks v Cock n Balls - Cock n Balls have bonus of 2000
  • Plough v Laughing Fish - Plough have bonus of 5400
  • Star v Glynde Club - Star have bonus of 1100

So, as an example, in the game at the Star the home team have a bonus value of (3800 - 2700 =) 1100. After the draw the Star captain will select the 3 games on which they will play the 'Joker'. This should be clearly marked on any score card(s) so that both teams are aware. In each of these 3 games, the Star player will be given a starting score of 1100. Note that the allotment of 'the break' is not affected - the away team will receive it in games 1, 3, 5 as normal.
The 3 Jokers should be indicated on the 'scorecard' when returned. A new column has been added to the online result page to allow for this.

A couple of clarification points:

  • - A black peg erases ALL score - including any initial bonus;
  • - The Joker cannot be played on a conceded game (bye).

Good luck everyone!

28/09/2014: New season - rule changes

The season starts on Monday 30 September. Please note changes to Lewes league rules.

All games must now be played according to the Playing Conditions and Rules of Play of the All England Bar Billiards Association.

The new rules are broadly the same, but there are a few significant new/amended rules to note:

  • 27 (O) If the cue ball fails to reach an imaginary line through the black peg and parallel with the top cushion and does not strike another ball, it will be returned to the tray and the player loses his break. (this does not apply to the last ball of the game).
  • 31. If the balls are disturbed in any way other than in the normal course of play, then the scorer should replace the balls in what he/she considers to be their original positions and play should continue. If, in the opinion of the scorer, a ball on the edge of the hole falls due to any accidental or deliberate table movement by the player, that the ball be replaced and will not count and the break will end.
  • 34. If a ball obstructs the placing of a ball anywhere in the 'D', but no foul shot has been played, it will remain there, but will be removed to the trap at the end of the current break (similar to the leaning peg/obstructed spot situation).

SEASON 2012-13 RULE CHANGE

Please note that the rules for notifying match results have been tightened this season and will be rigorously enforced. The change is shown below.

Both teams are now equally responsible for submitting the result within 48 hours. Note that it is not necessary that both teams submit a result; but if no result is received, both teams will lose all points for the match.

Rule 35 MATCH RULES, paragraph vii:

Old rule

vii. The winning Captain shall be responsible for returning the score cards, and notification of the result to the League Secretary. In the event of a drawn match, the home Captain shall be responsible for the return of the score card and notification of the result. All results should be returned to the League Secretary with 5 days of the match being played. Failure to do this will result in 2 points being deducted from the offending team.

New rule

vii. Match results must be notified to the League within 48 hours, i.e. before midnight on the second day following the match date. The captains of both teams are equally responsible for notifying the result, using one of the methods approved by the committee. Details of notification methods, along with relevant telephone numbers and email/website addresses, will be distributed to teams at the beginning of the season. Any postponements or changes of date must likewise be notified to the results secretary within 48 hours. If neither team submits a result within the allotted period, except in exceptional circumstances approved by the committee, the match shall be recorded as a 0-0 score and no points shall accrue to either team.

League Cup Rules - 2011/12

The league cup competition this season will be "Off-the-spot with a 3K cap".

Matches will consist of 5 single games, as in normal league matches, with opponents drawn randomly. The away team will have the break in games 1, 3 and 5. All shots must be played with the cue ball on the spot.

No individual break shall exceed 3000. If, after any shot, the current player's break reaches or exceeds 3000, the scorer shall call 'end of break' and exactly 3000 will be added to the player's score. The other player will then take their turn at the table, and will play the balls from where the previous player left them.

All other playing rules will be as for normal league games.

The competition will be decided on the results of 10 matches - one point per game won, as in the league competition. For the first segment of the competition, teams will play each of the other teams, either home or away (7 games). When this segment is complete, the top 4 in the table will play each other (3 games); and similarly with the bottom 4. These games will be at the reverse venue, as compared with the earlier meeting.

Lewes Finals 2011

Lewes Finals Night will be held on Monday 6th June at CKRBL, start time 7.30pm. More details here.

Note that some matches are to be played early on Sunday 22 May.

Captains Cup

Congratulations to Richard Spurrier for winning this year's competition. Details on the message board here.

League Cup - Rule Change

The committee have approved a slight change to the rules for the League Cup competition, to be effective immediately.

In future, the order of play in the second leg of the two doubles will be the reverse of the order in the first leg. The player who played last in the first leg will take the break in the second leg, and the player who broke in the first leg will play last in the second leg.

This is to try to avoid the possibility of players being shut out of the game for both legs if one player plays particularly well.

Please see the full rules here.

User Registration - the website has been enhanced to allow users to register and authenticate themselves on the site. Among other benefits (tba) this will enable users to enter results online. Register now!

Note: results cannot now be submitted through the website unless you are logged in.

League Cup Competition - starts on 15 November, and this year we have a new format:

Matches will consist of three games of two legs each. The first two games will be doubles, and the third singles.
Each leg will be played under normal rules - not off the spot. Scoring is 1 pt per leg plus 1 pt for aggregate score.
Please see the full rules here.

Beermatt Brewers top of the league! - can it be true?

Yes... league table

New season - started Monday 28 September.

We have nine teams again this season and, in addition to the normal league competition, we have the league cup which will again be under the ‘off the spot’ rule. This year the league cup is being run as a single division; each team will play every other team once, either home or away. There will be no play-off; the position in the division will determine the title.

There are two new innovations this season:

1) Rule change affecting the (Open) Doubles competition
From this season, players who take the break in the first or second game of a doubles match, may not take the break in the third game. This rule does not affect the Mixed Doubles. In this competition, the lady player must take the first turn for their pair in every game.

2) New Captains’ Cup competition
This is a one-day competition for team captains to be held on 1 March - venue to be decided.

Eddie Pilbeam - Sadly for those that remember Eddie, he died on Friday 26th June 2009 after a fight against cancer. Eddie was a long standing member of the league, and served as secretary for several years.  Sussex Express Announcements

HAYWARDS HEATH

For more information see the BB forum .

Half time - at the halfway point in the league competition the Sportsman have a narrow one point lead over the Bridge with a further gap of six points to CKRBL in third. The Droops could narrow the gap if they win their match postponed from November.

Match postponements - The matches below have been postponed:

27/10/2008 Plough v Sportsman (played Monday 10th November)
03/11/2008 Brewers Droops v Horns Lodge (played Friday 2nd January)
03/11/2008 Bridge v Black Horse (played Monday 24th November)

Honourable mention for Lewes league - the league web site receives a mention in a history of bar billiards on the blog of a long established Snooker company operating in the East Midlands since 1938.

Clayton & Keymer Champions - CK secured the championship title by beating the Bridge 3-2. The final game was also a head-to-head for the player of the year, with Ted Stringer taking the title by virtue of an early season drawn game against Colin Humphrey.

League Cup Final - The final of the League Cup (off-the-spot) competition will NOT NOW be held on 14 May at the Black Horse, Lewes. The two finalists are Brewers Droops and Laughing Fish.

All-England Team Championship - Entries are now invited for the Watney Mann Cup, which is also the Sussex qualifying competition for the All-England Team Championship. Teams are of 5 players, matches will be on a 2-leg home & away basis, and the winning team will represent Sussex at the national finals, which take place in Reading on Sunday, 21st October. Individual Competitions - See latest draw.

New Season 2006-07 - starts on Monday 9 October; team details and fixture lists are here.

We have eight teams this season and, in addition to the normal league competition, we have the league cup which will again be under the ‘off the spot’ rule. This year the league cup is divided into two divisions; each team will play teams in their own division home and away, but they will also play teams in the other division just once each. The top team in each division will play off in the final.

Note: The Chailey Lodge team has now been replaced by the Stand Up Inn, Lindfield.

Finals night 2006 summary - the Bridge took the Team Knockout title after a close match against CKRBL. Kevin Stoner took the mens title and Jean Over the ladies. Results round-up here, further reports to follow. The rest of the silverware went mostly to the Bridge with Derek Taylor and Jenny Edwards reserving some for the host club.
And who is this sneaking off with the league champions trophy?

League Cup ends in tie - after the last week of the League Cup (off the spot) competition the Bridge and Chailey Lodge are level on both points and matches won. The title will be decided by a play-off at the Firemans Arms on Mon 22 May.

Championship goes to the wire - The league championship will be decided at the Bridge on the last league match of the season, where Bridge entertain current champions Black Horse. The title will go to the match winners as recent results have left the two teams virtually level.

Bar Billiards Forum - Lewes now has its own entry in the British Barbilliards Forum.
